Welcome

Dear Eastway Middle School families,

Eastway Middle School, in the heart of the international area of Charlotte, was established in 1955. It has a long history of serving native Charlotteans as well as those who are newly arrived. Our student body, with students from more than 50 countries, is among the most internationally diverse in the state of North Carolina.

Eastway Middle School is a partial Leader in Me magnet school. Leader in Me teaches leadership and life skills to students. This creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. It also enforces the belief that our decisions determine the outcomes of our future more than our circumstances.  The Leader in Me process teaches students the skills needed for academic success in any setting: critical thinking, goal-setting, listening and speaking, self-directed learning, presentation-making and the ability to work in groups. The curriculum focuses around the seven habits of highly effective people identified by business consultant and author Stephen R. Covey:

  • Be proactive
  • Begin with the end in mind
  • Put first things first
  • Think win-win
  • Seek first to understand, then to be understood
  • Synergize
  • Sharpen the saw

Eastway Middle School offers students a rich array of academic programs. Our school offers three areas of focus: STEM, Earth & Environmental Studies and Global & International Studies. These are reinforced by elective offerings that include Spanish for high school credit, Agricultural Science, Energy & the Environment, Computer Science, App Creator as well as an array of visual and performing arts courses. Academically advanced students have the opportunity to pursue rigorous honors and high school level courses.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have been in education for 25 years, 10 of them as a principal. Before becoming principal of Eastway, I served as principal of Reedy Creek Elementary.  I have also served in CMS as an executive director of curriculum supports programs, regional assistant to the high school superintendent, assistant principal at Crestdale Middle School and as a human resources analyst. I have taught middle school language arts and high school English in CMS.

I was born in South Korea and immigrated to the U.S. when I was four years old. I graduated from Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville. I earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in school administration from UNC Charlotte. My experiences as an immigrant and a first-generation college graduate have solidified my belief that every child, regardless of circumstance or birth, deserves access to caring teachers and a high quality educational experience.

I look forward to working with you. Thank you for choosing Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Eastway Middle.
